Most cheerleading try outs are unfair.  I remember being discriminated against for the benefit of other students and then to top it off my sideline was used in the football game.

11-19-07
My daughter cheers for all stars. The all star teams here take any girl who signs up and they are amazing! They work with the girls to get them tumbling and teach them jumps and stunting.

I believe your idea would work, but I doubt it would catch on for school teams with limited resources.

11-10-07
I think everyone should cheer when it comes to elementary level but not high school or all-star. Cheerleading is like any other sport in which goals must be set and as a coach you must display some level of ability. Sure there are some programs out there that are unfair or maybe not the right fit for your daughter but to take on the whole cheerleading industry and open up teams for everyone is unreasonable. What would happen to the saftey of stunting and tumbling then if your child did not have the ability to keep up with the others. Then you would just have her on the team but sitting out and that isn't much fun either.

11-6-07
I believe that the idea is nice but I don't agree with it. Yes it is heart breaking if you don't make your school cheerleading squad, but not making the squad just means work harder and try out next year. It's not fair to let anyone on the squad when the some girls have been working hard for years on perfecting the sport and have given their all to it. Why should some girl (or boy) make the squad just because they believe it's such a glamorous sprot, or because they want to be more popular. That's not what cheerleading is about and if you want to make the squad that bad then WORK FOR IT!

11-5-07
The "basketball team" analogy below is a very old and tired arguement and it's not strong enough to exclude all those who would like to participate in a school activity.  If students want to have a "gymnastics cheering squad" then schools can make "gymnastics cheering" one of the alternating cheer squads in the "Everybody Cheers" program.

THIS PETITION!!!
Trying out for a sport is not a bad thing. It is a learning experience, and if you cannot accept the facts of it, then obviously you do not have the proper attitude required for a real cheerleader. Does your local basketball team let on every person who wants to play, just because they want to play? NO! Do professional football teams allow every single star-wannabe to be on their team? NO! Cheerleading is no different- the team works hard, competes, requires athletic ability with good physical condition, and entertains people. No, it may not be a lifetime sport, but neither is any other sport! And no, it may not be useful in corporate America. However, cheerleading is an activity that brings a lot of people confidence and pride. And for the record, I'm not talking about the players that the squads cheer for- because cheerleaders do more than just cheer for their players. They cheer for themselves-have you ever seen a cheerleading competition? And how many of you petition supp
orters can say that you have half that amount of athletic ability? That's what I thought! This petition is for people who have no true passion for the sport. If you really wanted to be on a cheerleading squad, then you would work for it- go to the weight room or dance and gymnastics classes. If you do not have the monetary means, then work on your own. Make your body healthier by making better food choices and taking the stairs. You'd be amazed at what you could accomplish with hard work! Don't think that tryouts discriminate against anybody-because that's illegal, and no cheer coach would cut a guy or girl because they are too fat or another skin color, religion, or whatever. Finally, don't support this petition just because of the most ridiculous reason- lack of self-confidence. If you are too afraid to try out for the squad, then it's your fault-not the coach's or anybody else's-that you didn't make the team. If you want it bad enough, then go for it! My coach repeats thi
s quote all the time to our competitive squad- "Go big or go home!" and it's true! Don't go into something half-hearted. Give it your all and at the end of the day, then at least you can say you tried and take pride in that!
Sincerely,
Lisa Lange

I don't like this idea at all, my daughter has worked hard and long for years to learn elite and advanced cheer stunting and tumbling often sacrificing time with friends and parties to devote time to cheering.   She will be going into High School next year and even with tryouts the squad does not have enough skill.   There are other ways to show school spirit.  Cheerleaders ARE athletes and they need to be respected as that.  Letting any ole body who wants to cheer make the squad will take away what little respect  this sport has developed over the years.  If you have school spirit join the pep club if you don't make the cheer squad.

10-12-07
I'm trying out for cheerleading and I'm in seventh grade... I don't know if I am good enough to make it.  I need to work on my jumps... especially my pike.

10-2-07
I think this is a horrible idea.  Tryouts are essential for a program that is competitve.  If someone isn't good enough to make a team, they should find something else.  If your son wants to be the QB of the football team, do you think he should be if he can't throw.

You, as a parent, need to teach your child to accept defeat graciously.  Changing the rules to suit yourself is not very ethical... Way to go.

9-29-07
THIS CONCEPT IS A BUNCH OF GARBAGE. EVERYONE DOES NOT HAVE THE SKILL OR ABILITY TO CHEER. THIS CONCEPT ONLY DIMINISHES THE QUALITY OF SQUADS AND MAKES THE "REAL" CHEERLEADERS LOOK BAD. YOU NEED SKILL AND ABILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY OTHER SPORT, WHY SHOULD CHEERLEADING BE ANY DIFFERENT.

9-1-07
I'm a cheerleader, and this idea is great, but definitely unpractical. Cheerleading, especially competitive, is hard work and not everyone can do it.If everyone can be a cheerleader, whats the pride and accomplishment of becoming one? Its lost because EVERYONE could just go and sign on up.

I think the everybody cheers is a great idea but i wouldn't necessarily consider
it fair either.Last year i tryed out for my cheer squad and i didn't make it needless to say i was devestated but it made me try harder to give it my all and make it my goal to make the team this year.I made varsity and it took alot of hard work to get to the level that i needed to be but it sure payed off and if i wouldn't be to happy if all i worked for got taken away because another girl cried about it...its a great idea but they dont have to do anything but say i want to be a cheerleader and it takes so much more than that

8-14-07
I think "Everybody Cheers" is a wonderful idea. I tried out for cheerleading my 8th grade & 9th grade years and didn't make it either year. I honestly didn't want to make cheerleading for the stereotypical "snob, 'look-at-me-I'm a cheerleader" aspect of it. I really wanted to do cheerleading because I love my school, have a lot of school spirit, and believe that cheerleading is an excellent sport and is a good way to stay involved and promote your school. I think that "Everybody Cheers" would work because of 2 reasons. One is I think that girls and guys that want to keep cheerleading "competetive" at their school should keep their team organized the way it is [annual tryouts, cuts, and strictly elite and competetive]. Then there should be a team of girls and guys that want to cheer, but aren't interested in the competetive aspect of it. These would be the people that just want to cheer because they truly love their school and just want to show off their school spirit
 .

I agree with people that say that cheerleading is a sport; I think it's an excellent sport. But for those of you that don't think this is a good idea, think of it this way: anybody can sign up at a local gym for either competetive gymnastics or just instructional/recreational gymanastics. Either way the gymnasts have a passion for the sport, whether they're good enough or not to do competetive gymnastics. I am participating in gymnastics up until the time comes for tryouts next year, and hopefully I'll make the team not only because of my skill, but because of my passion for my school. I think it would be pretty cool to see if "Everybody Cheers" would work in schools around the country.

8-14-07
Wow, I had no idea cheerleaders were so rude and obnoxious.  Can you say looser?

8-14-07
You have a weak argument because cheerleading is supposed to be a fun activitiy, NOT brain surgery.

8-12-07
It is so wrong to put uncoordinated girls on a squad because their 50 year old moms couldn't make the squad back when they were in high school. We can't all be cheerleaders just like we can't all be mathematical geniuses or soccer players. My squad is #2 in the nation and I would be heart-broken if anyone was allowed to just join without tryouts. What if that were the case in life? Anyone can just be a teacher, anyone can be a brain surgeon, (no, no, no, dont take a test to see if you qualify, just walk on in and hunny, and do your best!)It's just not how life works, you have to work hard, have talent, determination, and natural ability. Get over your past, and don't punishsquads all over america  by putting ANYONE on the squad.

8-7-07
I think this is an awesome idea and can speak personally on how cheerleading can be the best of times AND the worst of times for a child. I believe if there could be some positive changes made it might make a huge difference to a lot of kids and their parents. I am also concerned in the direction that all-star competitive cheerleading is heading as my daughter has participated in this level of cheerleading for the last few years but decided to recently quit due to the increased cost, dangerous stunts, sexually suggestive dances, and unfair practices at some of the gyms. These issues do nothing to elevate a childs confidence, morals, or self-esteem and actually do the opposite.

8-6-07
Bet you can't do back handsprings all the way down the court

8-6-07
Is that all that's important to you?  Fun cheering?

8-6-07
Yeah just think of all of the people that would want to cheer for a losing football team all of the time.  with five strings of all of the boys who want to play football and them all taking turns instead of playing the best.......  ha.. there would be so much to cheer for. huh?

7-3-07
I disagree with the person below.  Why should you exclude anyone who wants to play sports?  Is winning more important than giving everyone a chance to be a part of something?  With good organization and help from parents, a school can let everyone participate if they really want to do it.

7-2-07
so i think this is a noble concept here but i myself am a cheerleader and i must say i dont agree with this concept at all.cheer is a sport just like any other so unless you plan on letting everyone on ALL teams you can't let everyone on cheer. Girls work hard to get on the team and if everyone made it the team  the actual "experiencced/good" girls would suffer.

6-23-07
Everyone should not make the cheerleading team without tryouts because a person could join with no skills and jepordize the whole team.

I think the mom has to realize that these girls are still young, and getting a further education. If they say cheer is their Life that is how they feel now. Being a Cheer "leader" does not mean you have to have perfect grammer that why you still have to go to school, and meet certain academic criteria in order to stay on the team. Some women choose to be cheer coaches for a living, that shows that cheer can be life for some. Just because some girls that are Cheer "leaders" are said to have mannerisms that you don't like, everyone is titled to their opinion, but Cheer "leaders" should not be stereotyped, and that is a huge problem. I was a cheerleader I was never a slut, stuck up, worried about what guy would be interested in me, or if my skirt was short enough, I did it for to help build school spirit and so do many other girls.

6-6-07
OK whoever posted on 5-31... Cheerleading IS A SPORT, not an activity. Cheerleaders CAN function alone. HAVE YOU NEVER HEARD OF COMEPTITION HIGH SCHOOL SQUADS!?!?! You go to a competition and you cheer against OTHER SQUADS! Oh my gosh! No football or basketball team there! Cheerleading, if you are serious about it, is a lifestyle. It takes up five days of my week, and I am very passionate about it. I don't appreciate you saying it isn't a sport... Because, it's my life and if anyone disagrees with me, then you obviously 1) didnt make it. or 2) werent serious about it.
But yeah, the only thing making cheerleading an ACTIVITY is THIS WEBSITE. Oh, and by the way...this everybody cheers concept won't work. No coach in their right mind would do this to their girls who have worked so hard for their spot and totally like competed for that squad. Cause then well... the squad would SUCK. And ma'am...the one who posted on 5-21 who's scared about your little four year old... You are doing a good thing! She will learn leadership and teamwork and if she becomes part of a school squad they will require her to keep her GPA up! Not all cheerleaders are dumb. Just the ones who like to portray the "dumb blonde" act. Honestly! I cheer five nights a week and i still have a 4.0 GPA. Cheerleading is a great activity to get involved in.

6-6-07
Cheerleaders aren't snobby people. They just tend to be pretty, popular, and have a great smile. :]

Wow! You cool. I'd like too this.

5-31-07
i've always wanted to be a cheerleader its my dream to become one i luv to cheerlead but im kinda fat adn i think people might make fun of me so i just practice on my trampoline i cant do a split or a kartwheel or any flips i wish i could tho email me please at "mickeylover312@yahoo.com"

5-31-07
Cheerleading is not a sport; it is an activity.  I can prove it too.  A local high school did not have enough girls to have a cheerleading squad for the football season one year.  Believe it or not, the football team managed to play and complete the entire schedule without one cheerleader on the sidelines!!!
True story.  Cheerleaders cannot exist if they do not have a football or basketball team to cheer for.  They cannot function alone; that means they are not a sport.

The NCAA has called for the abolishment of racial and sexual sterotypes.  Although I support your idea, I believe it would be better for women in general if such silly activities as dance team and cheerleading did not exist.
Elimination of such should start in grade school and high school.

5-23-07
I am now a rising sophomore.

In the end of 7th grade, I tried out for the next 8th grade cheerleading squad. I didn't make it. But, I knew it was fair.

During my 8th grade year, I took dance. And then at the end of 8th grade, I tried out and made it for the next 9th grade squad! But, it was a rebuilding year, so basically EVERYONE that tried out made it. I didn't feel very accomplished.

And now, at the end of my 9th grade year, I just tried out for 10th grade squad. i made it! not as many girls did, and the accomplishment feels so good. When I didn't make it, i knew it was fair. and now that i've practiced, and made it fair and square, it's great.

Most girls that aren't very good just want to be a cheerleader so they can call themselves cheerleaders. girls that actually work and have stamina can make it.
I can't tumble (handsprings, tucks, layouts, etc) and my jumps aren't great. But I smile, have pep in my step, and i made the competiton squad, vasity basketball & wrestling, and junior varsity football!

so take some dance/gymnastics classes, and try out next year!! =]]5-2-07
Are all of you girls cheerleaders like we have here.  "Mean Girls/"  You sound like it.  I am a mother, my daughter is a cheerleader, but some of the girls on the squad do not deserve to beat some of the girls that didn't get it, they are mean, slutty, and drink, they are above the rules, and maybe if they were knocked off of their pedestal cheerleading would improve.  Your attitudes stink, and you don't deserve your positions.

I don't know who yall think you are but tryouts are a good thing.
performing for the judges gives them a general idea of who truley wants to make it. If you don't make the team that means that you didn't give them that idea. Cheer leading is my life,it always has been and it always will be. I've worked my butt off becoming the cheer leader i am today. And i'm only in high school! This pettition is a horrible idea!

5-21-07
The opinions on this blog have made me extremely fearful of what I have just done.  I have a four year old daughter who looks up to the very girls that have responded to this blog.  Her school has brought a cheer program to campus, starting this summer, and she is very excited.  But, am I the only one that has noticed the cheer"leader"s below can't spell and are lacking grammatically?  And cheer is MY LIFE - get real!  I don't know about the rest of you, but I see very few 40 year-old CHEERLEADERS in the business community.  Who knows - I could be in the executive conference room with multiple former cheerleaders, but the operative word here is FORMER.  Cheer is not a LIFE - it is a sport, an elective, a great form of expression and motivating, self-esteem building activity.  I say work hard at all your endeavors, but don't mistake this as LIFE.  If my daughter begins to project any of the mannerisms or attitudes of the cheer"leader"s below I would be hard pressed to support a cheer endeavor. I will encourage my daughter to work hard for anything she wants to pursue.  All children should be given a far chance to prove to themselves whether they are "good enough" to cheer.  A few judges that see one performance can not see the full spectrum of skill a child possesses.  For the record my child has all the facets and capabilities to be a successful cheerleader if that is the road she so chooses.  I was also a successful athlete in school and the lead officer on my dance team in high school and college with many winning competitions under my belt; therefore, not a disgruntled "reject". I was lucky to see early on the positive attributes provided by such activities, but also recognized the value of other pursuits, like education.  Ladies - if you are going to lead, lead with style and grace.  These are the attributes that will make you powerful and successful in LIFE.
-A Concerned NEWCHEERMOM

5-20-07
this is ridiculous. You don't start petitions to get everyone who wants to play football on the team do you? how about basketball? soccer? yah didn't think so. Cheerleading is the same. some people just physically cannot be a cheerleader just as some physically cannot be a football player. sorry, and yeah it sucks, but thats life. we can't cater to everyones wants. if they truely want to be on a squad then they'll work their butts off and train until they're good enough. your petitions are just the lazy and easy way to go about things.

5-13-07
hi. I disagree with this idea completey. If u dont make the cheerleading squad then maybe that is not your "thing" find something else that you are good at. Dont change the rules and take away from the ones who work hard and do make it. If everyone was a cheerleader then it would be nothing special about it and there would be lazy and irresponsible people on the squad. Also you can do stunts with people that just are not coordinated. Every one can cheer in the stands. There is no reason why you cant sit in the stands and still show ur spirit. Paint your faces yell loud whatever. Life is full of dissapointments. what are you teaching ur kids? if you dont get something change the rules? what if anyone who wanted to play on the volleyball and football teams could? the teams just wouldnt be as good. If you really want to be a cheerleader, there are many squads that let u make it automatically so go there. For some people cheerleading IS there "thing" Dont ruin cheerleadi
ng for the ones that work hard and are good at it. Just find an alternative.

5-11-07
well i was loud preppy i smiled did a great herky i said my cheer clear and loud and i didn't make it what was the problem

5-9-07
Cheerleaders are generally snotty, slutty girls who have NO talent, and obviously, have much to learn about language arts.  I say more time spent on schoolwork and less time spent worrying about how short the skirt is and what boy will be impressed by it.

5-9-07
Ha. Is this a joke? Cheerleading is a sport, you have to work to be a cheerleader. I never knew how much physical activity cheerleading required till i was on the high school squad my freshman year. We have 3 hour practices and work our butts off. If people think that we just stand around and jump up and down, they are very mistaken. Plus, if your daughter gets handed a spot on a cheerleading squad, whats that going to teach her? You don't have to work for anything and that it's just handed to you. This is the worst idea i have ever heard. If you or your daughter want to be a cheerleader, then you have to work for it.

5-7-07
I think that is a great idea
because all of those girls that
don,t make feel like they're not
good enough to cheer cause of
stupid try-outs!!!!

5-7-07
I would seriously be really mad if anyone who wanted to be a cheerleader made it. I'm a part of a very good squad and we are proud of that. We cant have girls on there who cant do a thing or dosent have any skills whatsoever because that completely defeats the purpose of being a cheerleader. You cant get far in competition with girls who dont know what their doing! Our squad wouldnt have gotten first place at our first comp. if that was the case! Cheerleading is a SPORT which means you have to have some kind of talent, and in this case it requires A LOT of talent. I mean, how would a school feel about their squad if they couldn't do anything worth watching? I mean, WOW look! they can yell and wave pom poms! Well...its more than that. Cheerleading takes HARD WORK and DETERMINATION and u have to give 100% at all times and if you dont WORK for your position on the squad it wouldnt mean a thing... This is a joke...It wont happen...

 4-18-07
This pettition is STUPID!!!!!
Everyone knows that some 200 pound girl wont make it. dreaming about it and making it happen are two totally different concepts. I dreamed about it when i was 4 then i made it happen when i was 5. i worked my butt off and made the team. And no one is taking that from me. Cheering is my life. I cheer for both my school and a competitive team. our comptitive team is #7 in the nation (plus canada). And why are we #7 in the nation? because we work our butts off 24/7!

4-12-07
ok, this is quite possibly the stupidest idea i've ever heard.  whoever created this website is just jealous because they never had the talent to become a real cheerleader.  THERE'S A REASON THE GIRLS WHO DIDN'T MAKE THE SQUAD DIDN'T MAKE THE SQUAD!!  and you want to know what that reason is?  they simply weren't good enough.  so instead of sitting here whining about how you didn't make the squad fifteen years ago, you should get on with your life.  if everyone made the squad who wanted to be on it, there would be no talent.  i am a cheerleader for my school, and let me just tell you that if everyone made it who tried out we never would have gotten to competition.  this website should be shut down.  it's a joke.

4-0-07
I think this is the worst idea.  Cheerleading is something a person has to work for.  Some girls work their entire life to become a cheerleader.  It shouldnt just be handed to those who wake up one day and decide to be a cheerleader it doesnt and never should it happen that way. Cheerleading is life to some girls and in real life you work for things you want they arnt handed to you.  Those who want to be a cheerleader should work for it.  If they arnt good enough keep working on it and try out next year.  I also think that trying out every year even if you are already on it is a good idea as well.  If you had a bad attitude that year and didnt put forth a good effort then someone who really would put forth that effort could take their place.

4-1-07
Many years ago, I was a cheerleader for 3 yrs.  We actually "tried out" for 9/9 spots.  In other words, once you were a cheerleader, that did not mean you were going to be a cheerleader the following year which is the protocol at my daughter's high school.  It is absolutely ridiculous that former cheerleaders go through the act of "trying out" when they know they are already going to be on the squad.  Also, in tryouts, an "R" is marked by their names to indicate that they are returners.  This year, there will be 16 or 17 cheerleaders and already the girls are going around saying that there will be 12 open spots.  Does this not indicate that they have little faith that these returners will make it again on their own?  Also, why waste their time and everybody else's time in the tryout process if they already know that they will be on the squad the next year?  Another thing, why do the coach and the cheerleaders helping with tryouts need to be in the gym when the new girls try o
ut?  The former cheerleaders help and encourage the ones trying out.  They pick who they want to help and who they don't want to help.  Also, the judges do not need to know whether the coach or former cheerleader is related to one trying out?  This is all so unfair and biased to put it nicely.  By the way, I too, do not have a daughter trying out.  Can you tell that I am a disgruntled former cheerleader?  What's fair is fair and what's not fair is not.  I do believe that it would not be practical for anyone to be a cheerleader.
Anyone else want to comment on the unfairness of tryouts?

3-30-07
i just was bared

3-27-07
this isnt such a good idea. cheerleaders are supposed to be "leaders", people students can look up to. but if anyone can do it then there would be no point when the entire school can be a cheerleader. how big will the squad be??

3-20-07
Hey, it is a great concept that everyone should cheer, but, the original cheerleaders who have worked long and hard on routines and mandatory exercises should not have their glory taken away by a bunch of wannabees!! If people want to be cheerleaders THAT bad, then they should exercise and stretch just as hard as those who have been doing it since they were 3!!! Most schools have programs where anyone can cheer, but they have to work REALLY hard.

3-19-07
my school doesn't just have a cheerleading squad. 3 years ago we decided to combine cherleading and dance classes together. so to make the squad you have to be able to do all the requirments that you need to make a cheerleading and dance squad. I went to tryouts and knew all the dance steps and the cheer but when we went in front of the judges in pairs i totally freaked out and forgot the dance routine. i thought i did good, but the dance instructor said that she wathced me during tryout pracrices and i was great, but in front of the judges she said that if i hadn't messed up i would have made it. But i know that i will try hard to make the sqaud next year by taking a dance elective class givin to all 9th grade girls. i need to wok on my splits and turns in 2nd. i think that if i can do it then all of you can. just try hard. you don't even need a profeesional help. help yourself. i taught myself how to do a bunch of moves and tumbling by wathcing cheerleaders at my school and t.v. so just try your best and the best will be returned back to you.

3-19-07
Cheerleading is a sport.People need to tryout for sports, you wouldn't have this petition for football would you. Have you kids leave cheerleading for those who are good enough to make the team.
